The world of illustration and film art has lost a singular talent with the passing of Tony Stella. We were fortunate to call Tony a friend and collaborator, having worked closely with him these past few years on a celebrated series of posters for retrospectives on Japanese cinema masters Hiroshi Shimizu, Mikio Naruse, and Meiko Kaji.

Tony was a kindred spirit in his passion for Japanese film. His shared enthusiasm was unmatched, and we always looked forward to our yearly poster collaboration, eagerly anticipating what masterpiece he would conceive next. He was a true master of his craft, a beacon of incomparable artistry in an era where much film marketing has become a landscape of Photoshopped monstrosities.

Tony was singular. He brought his own unique, beautiful style to every piece—no Drew Struzan clone was he. His work spanned generations of cinema, from famously painting the key art for James Mangold’s *Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny* to reaching back to the earliest days of Steven Spielberg’s filmography. He once painted an uncommissioned, gorgeous poster for Spielberg’s *Murder by the Book* episode of *Columbo*.

I was working for Amblin at the time and wrote to Tony, hoping he could add a title treatment so I could buy one as a gift for Steven. While he couldn’t legally print it for sale, he generously produced a special, titled version for the director… and one for my own collection. That was the incredibly kind of man he was. Presenting Steven with that beautiful piece of art for such an important early work was a profound joy, made possible by Tony’s generosity and genius.

Tony Stella’s legacy is one of breathtaking skill, profound passion, and genuine kindness. His art enriched our visual culture, and his friendship enriched our lives. He will be deeply missed, but his iconic work ensures he will never be forgotten.
